What is the Intracoastal Waterway?

The Intracoastal Waterway is one of the most beautiful stretches of water a boater could ever find themselves on, running from as far north as Boston down along the Atlantic Seaboard and around the Gulf Coast to Texas.

Linked through an interlocking network of rivers, canals, and lagoons, the boater will travel about 3,000 miles to navigate and offers an array of fascinating scenery to take in along the way. Many snowbirds and new Florida residents who count themselves as boaters opt to take the route in certain months, offering a smoother journey than the Atlantic Ocean. The route eventually provides an accessible, popular option for Florida residents to get themselves out onto the water.

The Waterway offers some fascinating insights into Florida history in particular. Over time it has expanded in reach beyond its commercial activity to offer a wide range of recreational activities. Whether you’re heading out from the Jacksonville area for a cruise or taking a day cruise, you’re bound to find plenty of exciting action.
